There is a calm stillness about waking up when the sun's earliest rays of light begin to visit your hemisphere. There is just something about the people who are still asleep when you're already awake that feels so surreal.
When I was a kid, I would experience this phenomenon when my family would wake up just past midnight, pack the rest of our things, call a taxi, and head to the airport. O'Hare International was a thirty-minute cab ride from our house. But when we felt particularly fancy or got a good deal, my parents would get us the stretch limousine experience. When you're a kid, a limo is the height of luxury for some reason. And duh, you'd be right, limos are a super cool especially when you're not rich!
We would drive in the middle of the night to board a plane. By the time we got through the early morning traffic and the crowd waiting in security lines, we would see the sun come up as we took off into the atmosphere. Our time zone had just awoken and started their day when we landed. We were too giddy from traveling that we forgot we started our day in the middle of the night. We forgot we were tired because we got to start our family vacation. And even when we missed all that sleep, we would still get up early in the morning the next day to secure a spot on the beach as the sun came up.
Even though our family stopped taking vacations long ago, I still love enjoying a good sunrise no matter where I am. Sometimes, I like to watch from the comfort of my bed as the light shines outside—the sunlight allowing our electrical grid to "sleep" after working all night. The sunlight tells the birds to wake and start their chirping, and it tells the squirrels that run across tree branches to begin their day of finding nuts. Then, I hear the faint sounds of dogs barking on their morning walks, children playing outside, and cars driving by.
But just before all the noise starts, there is a calm peace I can sometimes feel for a brief moment. I feel no pressure to do anything or go anywhere. I feel like this moment is just for me or something dumb like that. There is so much pressure to "seize the day," but what if I wanna vibe? Instead of trying to secure a second income stream just to afford a $10 latte while trying to be a #Girlboss all the time. What if seizing the day could mean just getting up very early to enjoy a simple sunrise in the quiet hours of the morning?
When I eventually convince myself to "seize the day," I've already accomplished the most challenging step: actually getting out of my warm, comfy bed. I wish we lived in a world where our time wasn't divided into sections for productivity, sleep, and everything else squished into the last fraction of our waking hours. Instead, I want to live in a world where we can wake up and go to bed at any time, where we don't have to be or need to be productive for more than half of our day. A world where we can enjoy the simplicity of the 6 pm sunset or the 6 am sunrise and just have more than one (if any) peaceful moments a day to take it all in.
